Subterranean Homesick Blues

Great song. Good video.

Currently on YouTube and may periodically disappear. But here it is...

One of those simple but very effective ideas copied many times since. I like the Seether variation (see other posting) where People With signs tell us what they are really thinking. Great video for discussions for sociologists, anthropologists, psychologists, educators and the likeā€¦ I also like the song. Lucky me.

Seether Fine Again

Good song. Great video.

This may or may not work (the video embed but a search will show you places where the video keeps popping up. Not on YouTube today but may return).

A Vision of Students Today?

This is a great video.

It uses some simple techniques to effectively convey its message in a far more effective way than some dense written text or even another (yet another) PowerPoint show. Definitely worth watching. I've seen the technique on a few other videos over the years but Bob Dylan (video for Subterranean Homesick Blues) and Seether (video for Fine Again) are the best examples.

PGCHE'd

Well I'm pleased to say that I've passed my PGCHE.

Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.

Great course if rather heavily assessed (given how busy we are). But that's a universal student gripe I'm sure. Even if I hadn't passed I would have gotten a lot from this course. I've changed some of my practices as a result of things I've picked up on the course and in other instances it affirmed that I was already pretty good stuff, which is of course why I got the title of University Teaching Fellow a few years ago. Still get lots of things wrong but nice to know also getting plenty of them right.

I would certainly recommend the course to anyone thinking about it and the assessment load has been lightened so really nothing to quibble about.

MacBook Update(s)

This morning I went and bought a replacement Power Supply Unit (Actually MagSafe Power Adapter) and so was able to power up the new MacBook.

First thing it did was predictable. It wanted me to sign up with all kinds of details in relation to the warranty, Apple's marketing needs and anything else that suits them. Like many people I rarely read the full End User Licence Agreement (EULA). Who does (apart from maybe Lawrence Lessig and the EFF)?

It then surprised me a little by downloading lots of crucial-looking updates(I'm used to this from Microsoft) and wanting to re-start.

There was then a moment of confusion (on my part) before I realised it also wanted to perform a firmware download and re-start. Now maybe this is a rarity in the world of Apple and my machine was going online for the first time since it left the factory and was in dire need of the goodies.

It will be interesting to see if this keeps happening or if things quieten down.

MacBook - Oh Goody - Oh Dear!

Received a new MacBook today funded by a specific project but will have uses beyond that particular project. Couldn't wait to fire it up and begin to compare it against my own Vista laptop and some XP machines.

Looks gorgeous, even the packaging is desirable but the comparisons will have to wait as the first thing that happened was that the supplied MagSafe Power Adapter blew up on me. So it looks lovely but so far my Windows laptops are one up on the Mac because they at least got as far as powering up before giving me grief the first time I used them.

No doubt a replacement will take ages to organise under the warranty so I'll to just go and buy one as I need to get up to speed on the MacBook before installing some project related software...
